Welcome to New Ulm, Minnesota, located in Brown County and the beautiful scenic Minnesota River Valley! Rest assured, you will enjoy a stay at The Bohemian. Located on German Street (renamed Victory Street during the 2nd World War and then back again) the house is standing in fine company among some of the most interesting and varied architectural styles in the country. We would be happy to arrange a leisurely guided carriage ride to share the details, ( hard to see from the car, even on the 4th time around the blocks!) or simply enjoy a self guided walking tour. The Bohemian was constructed in 1899 by Amherst Bingham. Mr. Bingham, a French Canadian, owned and operated several grain elevators and a lumber company in New Ulm. Amherst and his wife Eva lived in this house for thirty years. They had no children. They did leave a lasting impression on one young boy, Heine Somsen, who shared…”Mr. Bingham was easily one of the most distinguished looking gentlemen in town and both he and Mrs. Bingham were gracious, splendid person.” In 1929, this house was purchased by Adolf Bremer. It was a wedding present for his daughter, Marie, who married Victor P. Reim, a local attorney. Adolf, along with his brother Otto, were bankers and brewers whose influence is still felt in the St. Paul and surrounding area. The Bremer name continues to flourish with a foundation to worthy causes and history books will forever record the 1934 kidnapping of Edward Bremer, Marie’s brother, by the Barker-Karpis Gang. Do I sense Murder History Dinner weekend here? And where exactly did Al Capone and his gang play some lively hands of poker?
Mrs. Reim and her husband were passionate with their time and involvement in the community, notably with the girl and boy scouts. Mrs. Reim’s generosity, honesty, beauty and charm still graces us, she will 102 in February!
Marie and Victor Reim raised 3 children in the house, of which my father Jim McCrea was a playmate to. I don’t believe we have any ghosts in residence but certainly great spirits at work: Jim and Vic Jr. both shared a shortened time on earth, left wonderful legacies, and seem to still be at work contributing to the well being of those they loved.
No matter what we call the house, in New Ulm, as well as in a corner of our own hearts it will forever be the Reim House. We invite you to begin a new journey of memories as we make “The Bohemian” our own, in honor of the times and people before us. Come join us in the footsteps of generous celebrations and may we all live up to be gracious and splendid persons together.
Fondly, Bobbi McCrea & Mark Wood Proprietors
