If it weren’t for my friend Sonya, there wouldn’t have been one Sunday morning for the Bavarian Blast, now in it’s 5th year. Let me share, it was an adventure where she didn’t simply cook. A rare departure from the Inn prompted me to ask Sonya, who I met several years ago as a guest, to cover for me so I might attend an event. Knowing I was in good hands, she puts on breakfast at 301 Summit Ave in St. Paul each weekend, I was confidant my guests would be delighted. Plus she wears a dirndl
, she even makes her own! So anticipating a casual morn of authentic German fare while enjoying a polka under the big top tent a storm of a different sort was brewing…A real one in Sonya and Travis’s home town. Off Travis left to attend his city power outage leaving Sonya to attend my guests, but more importantly, without a dancing partner for the rest of evening’s festivities. (He did arrive back the next day in time for the great parade!) I am eternally greatful for their loyal and loving gesture on my behalf! I am now thinking however. Could we pull off a dirndl sewing camp in time for Ocktoberfest!!! Who’s in!?

Savvy saves Earth at The Bohemian Bed and Breakfast
Sustainability seems to be ever more important to me. It’s been 15 years since building a strawbale house and living in a co-housing community. None of this is new, but lately witnessing either an act of thoughtless waste or thoughtful salvage can bring me to a roundhouse full of tears. Right now it just seems to deeply matter. Here at The Bohemian, among a new slew of taskforces strongarming industries, no matter how small, to greenify, we all just keep keeping on, in the perfect shade…an authentic hue. I am probably just not paying someone else to tell you that. But you know The Bohemian is always full of surprises, so this morning’s cup of joe for the guests wore the real green stamp of our nature: baby carrot tops in the coffee cups. I am pleased to see that baby Savvy is right on with our commitment to the guest experience. Surprises around every corner and saving the earth. And is there a more delightful sight than a wee one eating food just pulled from the dirt? Those tears emit pure joy.

simple fare at The Bohemian
I forget the fine art of simplicity sometimes. At a recent Heart of New Ulm
cooking class, for dessert, we created a yogurt and fruit parfait. Fresh, honest and real, plus it tastes like cheesecake. A greek yogurt, getting more readily available in our local grocery and a more positive price point than in the past (thank you Michelle Obama for a focus on better choices not being tied to our pocket books, someday easy nutrition for all) and cash wise brand granola with mangos and strawberries and we all had second helpings. so do the guests. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

With 190 thousand and counting apps for the iphone, recognizing one that steers folks to a bed and breakfast by some big guns is pretty impressive. Closing in on tourism week makes this count even more for those of us who get up and *go* to work, usually without breakfast and making beds rather than the luxury of sleeping in one that someone else has made. Innkeepers: we love what we do and we appreciate I Love Inns for how they continue to support the industry with their dedication and expertise! Happy Mothers Day to I love Inns: with recognition like this I am certainly her baby!

Garden Gnomes at The Bohemian Bed and Breakfast
Last week, anticipating new beginnings as I do at Easter, my Aunt and Uncle e-mailed and asked if they could come and be of some help at the inn. Eager for such an offer, I could never imagine what they would accomplish! The past two days have been filled with reorganizing and purging the ‘gateway’ from the kitchen to the dining room (for those of you who have glimpsed into this area, I need say no more) and tidying up the yard. And tidy implies no small feat. I am relishing the gracious act they have given, and in such a blessed season. The new growth in the yard sprouts with the awakening of possibilities this time of year brings. Thank you Butchie and Katie. The freedom you have afforded me, with completing daunting tasks for a lone individual, is a gift I hope springs eternal with each bloom and moment I now have to share with my daughters. So yes, these elusive creatures of folk lore and Marchen, they really do exisit, the elves and fairies, but, just as suspected, They Are Angels.

Turning over more than beds at The Bohemian B&B
Guest beds are not the only things that get turned over around here. Charlie, the baby and I got two flower beds outside cleaned out and ready to go. Who knows: there might be a blanket of snow yet to cover them once more, but it looks tidy and fresh. Smells good and Savvy oddly enough was a huge help. She likes to pick things up and put them somewhere, so sticks in a compost bin was perfect, and also fits into my plan of never buying another toy. again. ever. I’ve plenty of new growth coming up and I’m sure anything can be split and spread out, so anyone interested, grab a spade and head on over!

Valentines Day at The Bohemian
There are some days that are more magical than others, even here. Bockfest presents a welcome business to the cold winter, but falling on Valentine’s weekend limits the available room options for romance. Unless one considers the true gift of not starting Monday as the typical work week but rather a reminder of the beloved commitment we call ‘in a relationship’. So we have a handful of smarty pants today who have that one figured out. Busy readying the rooms, I was privilaged to witness one lucky recipent escorted to his room, blindfolded.
and mind you, I was ‘blind’ too: cleaning a room I simply heard the counting of steps, “turn” and ah…lots of giggling. Magic. May we all be blessed with the childlike delight of our loved ones, everyday.

Oven Fresh at The Bohemian Bed and Breakfast
The Bohemian welcomes Arabella, Charlie’s Granddaughter, to the world. She of course will be living with her Mama and Papa, Emmy Lou and Kevin, in Winona, MN but we look forward to her visits. Our own 2 1/2 year old Aunt Savvy has a busy time already bossing her 3 little nephews around so she is thinking this new girl creature is a real kick. Congratulations! Welcome Home!

What is happening in Haiti is terrifying. Waking up to a chronically ill child with a debilitating disease can’t be less so in the private worlds we call our own. I had guests this weekend who read about a family in our community struggling with their 10 year old son’s diagnosis of leukemia. A blood drive is taking place this week in New Ulm. Moved to action they will be coming back to participate. I am often, surprisingly, asked, ‘who stays at a bed and breakfast?’. Lynn and Sandy, and others exactly like them. Others picking up the phone and pledging from afar in addition to answering the call from home. I welcome these guests back with fresh towels and a quick wipe of the tub in hopes of facilitating change in one little person’s well being and easing a Mother’s pain. Our lives are filled with moments that can offer gracious gestures. Another secret passion of Sandy’s is skiing and Karaoke, today he will have it all with a ton of compassion. How simple.
